Live music in Colombo

The authorities (wife) have cleared it and I will be in Colombo for about a week in September with my brother. He will be pretending to do some work and i'll mooch about, do some clothes shopping, see some friends and family and hopefully see lots of good live music.

Can anyone give me any ideas on the live music? I want to see as many good bands as possible so I am sure Clancys will be high on the list. Sunday afternoons at Barefoot (although I only have one Sunday there) . Where else? Who are the really good bands to see? Any recomendations would be appreciated.

I need music. Feed me.

Clancy's is only good for watching third rate pub bands covering second rate AOR songs.

So what do you recommend?

As far as English rock music goes there isn't a lot out there to be honest. Rock Saturday (if u r around for one) has some decent orginal music but is a bit too metal orientated. also don't get me wrong, if you like competent covers of the Eagles etc. places like Clancys are fine.

the jazz stuff at barefoot seems to get good reviews.

ok - thanks for that. We arrive on a Sat so I might check out the Rock thing if it's on and i'm not too knackered. I sometimes like the cheese of a competent covers band and I like to check out other drummers. I have met a couple of really good kit drummers in SL, one of whom shared the same name as me.

Thanks for your comments

What kind of music do you like? Judging from your Pearl Jam post, I am thinking you lean towards alternative (I do as well), but you *have* to check out Stigmata and Hollowpoint Halo when you are here.

Stigmata - as the name suggests - are a heavy metal band. I don't know if you've heard of them, but they have two albums out and are very very very good. They rock live.

HPH is alternative rock and, whilst I am not a fan of their studio material, they are brilliant live. (Their acoustic cover of Tool's Anema has to be heard to be believed)

So yeah. Come down and check these two out. Let me know if you need more information.

Actually I like most, from heavy metal to funk. Are you aware of any listings I can get hold of to tell me who is playing and where, or should I just rely on word of mouth?
Any guidance would be much appreciated.

I would avoid Clancy's unless you havent been there for about say 6 years or so...thats how old the playlist there is (crowds gotten well dodgy there as well recently)! There isnt much to choose in terms of original stuff, jazz and barefoot is nice as nrh mentioned.

If you're looking to relax on a sunday, sundown at Tantra is pretty good...some decent acoustic covers of damien ricey music, sunset in colombo, cold reserve and coke, shorts and sandals and some guaranteed eyecandy :)

That sounds cool to me, looks like the only Sunday i'll have there will be a busy one. If any of you guys fancy meeting up for a beer let me know!

hehe...now that sounds good! Maybe december 2006...u might also want to check on the brass monkey band, http://daytripper.wordpress.com/2006/05/26/the-comeback-kids/ , heard good things bout them...

Rhythmic Diaspora said...

Yep - I've read the good things too, they don't seem to play live very often though. Seriously I'll be there in the first week of September if you're around.

Well, there used to be jazz bands playing at the 80 club on sundays.. i shall check this up.. and accoustics played on sundays but i'll get you the location as well.. Nice blog by the way! Shall doo all the best to give your authorities approved visit ;)

That would be very kind of you. I haven't heard of the 80 Club, but I have heard of a Sunday jam session that used to happen on either the first or last Sunday of each month. Thanks for your comment.

First Sunday of every month (almost) is Jazz Union at CR&FC.

Last Sunday of every month is the accoustic gig at Bay Leaf.

Ummm for other stuff pick up a copy of LT. And avoid Rock Saturday, unless you're under 21 or are looking for girls under 21.

Thanks Azrael, I think the Jazz thing is looking promising, it's just a bummer i'm only there for one week. Rock Saturday is right at the bottom of my possible agenda now and I think it will stay there.
