Wir sind dann Helden fur diesen tag!

Last night's gig with the covers band was a blinder. The setlist, with the original artist's names, was this:

Set 1
  1. I feel good - James Brown
  2. Rebel rebel - David Bowie
  3. Little wing - Jimi H
  4. Dancing in the moonlight - Thin Lizzy
  5. In the crowd - Jam
  6. Two Princes - Spin Doctors
  7. Fragile - Sting
  8. Golden Years - David Bowie
  9. Smooth criminal - Alien Ant Farm version
  10. Under the bridge - Red Hot Chili Peppers (RHCP)
  11. By the Way - RHCP
  12. Lucy in the sky with diamonds - John, Paul, Ringo and George

Set 2

  1. Californication - RHCP
  2. Sha la la la lee - Small Faces
  3. Can't explain - The Who
  4. Fire - Jimi H
  5. China Girl - David Bowie
  6. Watching the Detectives - Elvis Costello
  7. From the floorboards up - Paul Weller
  8. Dani California - RHCP
  9. Psycho Killer - Talking Heads
  10. Purple Haze - Jimi H
  11. Tell me Baby - RHCP
  12. Play that funky music - Wild Cherry
  13. Hum da bump - RHCP

Yes, a shitload of Chili Peppers songs, but they go down really well and we do a fine job of playing them, even if I say it myself.

Other than that it was quite a mixed set, the pub was a lively little place and a good time was had by all. Me and AL (the bassist) are grooving along nicely.

I just thought I'd let you know.

Nice list, good sir.

I would have particularly enjoyed Little Wing and Lucy in the Sky.

I don't think I've told anyone this, but the guitar solo on Little Wing is the aural equivalent of an orgasm.

I noticed three songs from the Peppers' Stadium Arcadium. You guys ought to give the song titled Charlie a go. Fabulous guitar solo at the end.

Thanks Theena - Little Wing is the one cover we do in the funk band also, albeit it in a much funkier style. I'll check out Charlie and let you know.

Ooooh, a set with that many RHCP tracks.. Excellent.. How hard is it to actually pull off the Two Princes intro?

SC - The intro's not that hard but getting the feel of the track is a nice challenge. The drummer, Aaron Comess, has a great touch to his play and it's hard to replicate.

i really don't like stadium arcadium. i haven't listened to it too thoroughly, but i think most of sounds a little bit like everything from by the way, nothing sounds new and fresh. dani california is pretty damn bad. their sound is getting boring and is losing some of what made if exciting.

i really do like the alien ant farm's cover of what i think is one of michael jackson's better songs. its raw and thumping, distinctive but manages to stay faithful enough to the original in an interesting way...

Electra - I kind of agree with you. I think the Chilis are now just a big money making machine and are largely churning out songs that fit their already successful formula. However, I like many of the songs on Stadium Arcadium but I think they have got about 1 album's worth of decent material on the whole double album. Chad and Flea remain one of my favourite rhythm sections of all time.

I thought the first CD of Stadium Arcadium was pretty incredible for the Chilli's. Sure it wasn't jaw dropping - but hey, this is the Chillis; they don't do jaw dropping.

However, I thought every song on the first CD was arranged well with John Frusciante - the modern day Messiah of guitars - at the forefront. That is when RHCP really rock: when John is at the forefront, when Flea is allowed to groove along and when Anthony is way at the back or, preferrably, shutting up.

Has anyone here heard John Frusciante's solo material? Its light years ahead of anything the Chillis have come out with in their 20 years or so of music making.

Charlotte - Thanks a lot. It sounded good but I think the order can be improved upon.
